Radiology Tech Work Summary

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, they all have the identical fundamental job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They may work in Maquoketa IA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and also regularly evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to bear in mind is that Maquoketa IA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Iowa or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer other options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Maquoketa IA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Maquoketa 52060As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically carried out in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Maquoketa IA home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online approach to education is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just make sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

After you have selected the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating Maquoketa IA x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material factor as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Maquoketa IA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the Iowa xray technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Maquoketa IA health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Maquoketa IA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Maquoketa IA residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Maquoketa IA schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Maquoketa IA, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
