Quinebaug CT x-ray tech internship programBest wishes on your decision to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Quinebaug CT so you can learn to be a radiologic technologist. But now that you have made a decision to go into the rewarding field of healthcare, exactly how do you set about choosing the ideal college and program so that you will obtain the appropriate training to become a qualified practitioner? And since most states do mandate that radiology techs become licensed, depending on where you ultimately practice you may require preparation to pass a licensing test. So it’s important that you assess each of the colleges you are considering in order to compare each program. Many students begin by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and often gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while location and cost should be taken into consideration, there are additional important qualifications as well. For instance, you should ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internships. These inquiries and others you must ask the colleges you are examining are presented later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray tech does and the credentials and education choices that are available.

X-Ray Tech Job Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical primary job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They may work in Quinebaug CT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment plus frequently assess its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Quinebaug CT health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degree Options

x-ray machine in Quinebaug CTThe basic requirement for attending an x-ray tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to bear in mind is that Quinebaug CT radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Connecticut or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number offer other alternatives for testing also. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Quinebaug CT employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Quinebaug 06262As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often provided in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Quinebaug CT home. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online style of education is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are generally more affordable than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just be sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

When you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of locating and evaluating Quinebaug CT x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material variable also. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of xray tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Quinebaug CT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the Connecticut radiology tech schools you are reviewing have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Quinebaug CT health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Quinebaug CT healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Quinebaug CT home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Quinebaug CT colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Quinebaug CT, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Radiology Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you might be asked. One of the things that interviewers frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What made you pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not just the private reasons you might have for being an Xray technician, but also what qualities and talents you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, along with a certain number of routine interview questions, so you need to organize some ideas about how you would like to answer them. Given that there are several variables that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession appeals to you along with the strengths you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but write down some ideas and topics that pertain to your personal experiences and strengths. Reviewing sample responses can help you to formulate your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to enthuse the interviewer.
