These inquiries and others you must ask the schools you are considering are provided later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiology tech does and the credentials and training options that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Occupation Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical major job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, such as mammography. They can practice in Rogers CT hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment plus routinely evaluate its performance and safety. They are also required to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Rogers CT health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. Something to bear in mind is that Rogers CT radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Connecticut or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, based on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number approve additional alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, many Rogers CT employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Rogers 06263As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is often performed in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Rogers CT home. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually discover that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiographer Schools

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating Rogers CT x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? Most radiology technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Rogers CT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the Connecticut radiology tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Rogers CT healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Rogers CT healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Rogers CT residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Rogers CT schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Rogers CT, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to review questions you might be asked. Among the things that interviewers frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What drove you to decide on radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not merely the personal reasons you may have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but also what qualities and talents you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will undoubtedly be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, as well as a significant number of standard interview questions, so you need to prepare some ideas about how you would like to respond to them. Given that there are numerous variables that go into selecting a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When readying an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession interests you as well as the abilities you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the best choice for the position. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but write down a few concepts and talking points that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Reading through sample answers can help you to prepare your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to wow the interviewer.

Some Background on Rogers Connecticut

James Gamble Rogers

James Gamble Rogers (March 3, 1867 — October 1, 1947) was an American architect best known for his academic commissions at Yale University, Columbia University, Northwestern University, and elsewhere.[1]

Rogers was born in Bryan Station, Kentucky on March 3, 1867, to James M. and Katharine Gamble Rogers.[1][2] Rogers attended Yale University, where he contributed to The Yale Record and was a member of the senior society Scroll and Key,[2] whose membership included several other notable architects. He received his B.A. in 1889, and is responsible for many of the gothic revival structures at Yale University built in the 1910s through the mid-1930s, as well as the university's master plan in 1924.[2] He designed for other universities as well, such as the Butler Library at Columbia University, many of the original buildings at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center (now the NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center), and several buildings at Northwestern University, notably Deering Library.[2]

He died in New York City on October 1, 1947.[2]

Rogers was philanthropist Edward Harkness's favorite architect, and Harkness would often condition a gift for a new academic or medical building upon the institution's agreement to hire Rogers for the project. It is thus no coincidence that Rogers' work is abundant at Yale, Columbia and the other institutions Harkness supported lavishly. Though Harkness loved Rogers's work, when Harkness donated a new home for Wolf's Head, his society at Yale, another architect (Bertram Goodhue) was chosen.

Rogers' Collegiate Gothic designs for Yale lent an air of instant heritage and authenticity to the campus. Rogers was criticized by other prominent Gothic-revival American architects, namely Ralph Adams Cram, for his use of steel frames underneath stone cladding, and tricks such as splashing acid on stone walls to simulate age. Rogers was also criticized by the growing Modernist movement of the time. The 1927 Sterling Memorial Library came under especially vocal attack from Yale students for its historicist spirit and its lavish use of ornament. But current opinion generally regards the building as a triumph, being both beautiful and functional.
