These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are considering are provided later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiology technician does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Tech Occupation Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, each has the identical principal job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They may practice in Dorris CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and also frequently assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Dorris CA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate also. Something to consider is that Dorris CA radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be working you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number approve additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Dorris CA employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Dorris 96023As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically provided in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Dorris CA home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional options. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just make sure that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

After you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of looking for and assessing Dorris CA x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining factor also. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? Most radiology tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Dorris CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the California xray tech schools you are assessing have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Dorris CA health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Dorris CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Dorris CA home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Dorris CA colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Dorris CA, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Desire to Become an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's important to consider questions you could be asked. Among the things that hiring managers typically ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not just the personal reasons you might have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and talents you have that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, as well as a significant number of general interview questions, so you should prepare some ideas about how you would like to address them. Since there are several factors that go into choosing a career, you can answer this primary question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession interests you as well as the abilities you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but write down several ideas and talking points that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Going over sample answers can help you to develop your own thoughts, and inspire ideas of what to include to enthuse the interviewer.
