And because most states do require that radiology techs become licensed, based on where you ultimately practice you may need preparation to pass a licensing examination. So it’s imperative that you assess each of the colleges you are considering so that you can evaluate each program. Most potential students begin by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their homes. Next, they check tuition and frequently gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while expense and location need to be taken into consideration, there are additional critical qualifiers also. For instance, you should find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are reviewing are presented later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a x-ray technician does and the credentials and training choices that are available.

X-Ray Tech Career Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, each has the same major job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They may practice in Pleasureville KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment plus regularly assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Pleasureville KY health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that Pleasureville KY radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Kentucky or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer other alternatives for testing also. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Pleasureville KY employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Pleasureville 40057As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a substantial portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is usually carried out in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Pleasureville KY residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually find that the online approach to learning is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online programs are often less costly than conventional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing Pleasureville KY x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Pleasureville KY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the Kentucky radiology tech schools you are interested in have associations with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Pleasureville KY healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pleasureville KY healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Pleasureville KY home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Pleasureville KY schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Pleasureville KY, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Be a Radiology Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you may be asked. One of the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer prospects is "What made you select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is hoping to uncover is not only the private reasons you may have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what characteristics and skills you possess that make you outstanding at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, along with a certain number of general interview questions, so you need to prepare some approaches about how you want to address them. Given that there are numerous variables that go into selecting a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a number of ways. When preparing an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession appeals to you in addition to the talents you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the job. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but write down a few concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Some Background on Pleasureville Kentucky

Pleasureville, Kentucky

Pleasureville is a home rule-class city in Henry and Shelby counties, Kentucky, United States. The population was 834 at the time of the 2010 U.S. Census.[3]

In 1784, 30-odd Dutch Huguenot families colonizing present-day Mercer County purchased 10,000 acres (4,000 ha) from Squire Boone. They erected a fort for their protection about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of present-day north Pleasureville. Their land was held and cultivated in common, but managed by Abraham Banta. It was variously known as "The Dutch Tract", the "Low Dutch Settlement" or "Station", and "Bantatown", but the post office was established as "Pleasureville" c. 1828,[4] and the city was incorporated under that name in 1842.[5][1] Rennick relates the local story that it derived from a visitor expressing what a pleasure it was to stay among such pleasant people,[4] but others say the area of the post office housed a bordello (at the site of the later Pleasureville Hotel and a present-day apartment building).[6]

In 1858, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad arrived, but its course ran about a mile south of the former community. The post office relocated to the new settlement around the depot in 1874, which received the name "Pleasureville", and the former city became known as "North Pleasureville". It received a separate post office under that name in 1879. The town and city merged in 1962, although the two halves are still sometimes called "North Town" and "South Town" by locals.[4]

Pleasureville is located in southern Henry County at 38°20′57″N 85°6′51″W / 38.34917°N 85.11417°W / 38.34917; -85.11417 (38.349165, -85.114201)[7] in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. A small portion of the "South Town" part of the city extends south into Shelby County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.46 square miles (1.2 km2), all land.[3]

The community is located on Kentucky Route 241, which runs through both North and South Towns, and on U.S. Route 421, which runs through North Town. KY 241 leads south 13 miles (21 km) to Shelbyville (via Kentucky Route 43). US-421 leads northwest 6 miles (10 km) to New Castle, the Henry County seat, and southeast 23 miles (37 km) to Frankfort, the state capital.
