There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, they all have the identical major job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They may practice in Coal Creek CO hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to bear in mind is that Coal Creek CO radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Colorado or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be employed you might need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number offer additional alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Coal Creek CO employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

attending x-ray tech school online in Coal Creek 81221As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is usually performed in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Coal Creek CO residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online style of learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are generally cheaper than conventional options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

Once you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and assessing Coal Creek CO x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Coal Creek CO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the Colorado xray tech schools you are assessing have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Coal Creek CO healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Coal Creek CO healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Coal Creek CO residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Coal Creek CO schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Coal Creek CO, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
