No matter what the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some opt to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They may work in Ider AL hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to finish and is more expansive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Ider AL radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Alabama or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number offer additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Ider AL employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Practical training is often provided in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Ider AL home. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually discover that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are generally cheaper than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just be sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of locating and assessing Ider AL x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material factor as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ider AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Alabama radiology tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Ider AL health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Ider AL healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Ider AL residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Ider AL colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Ider AL, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Become an Xray Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to consider questions you might be asked. One of the questions that interviewers frequently ask radiographer applicants is "What made you choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is hoping to uncover is not only the personal reasons you may have for being a radiology technician, but also what qualities and abilities you possess that make you exceptional at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, as well as a significant number of standard interview questions, so you need to organize some strategies about how you would like to address them. Because there are numerous variables that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a number of ways. When readying an answer, try to include the reasons the work appeals to you along with the strengths you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the best candidate for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but write down some ideas and talking points that pertain to your personal experiences and strengths.
