Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several accept other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Crestwood KY employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. Questions to Ask Radiographer Programs

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing Crestwood KY x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material factor as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of xray tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Crestwood KY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the Kentucky radiology technician schools you are interested in have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Crestwood KY home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Crestwood KY colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Crestwood KY, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
