But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and training options that are available.

X-Ray Technician Occupation Summary

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same major job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They may practice in Franklin IL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiology Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate also. Something to consider is that Franklin IL radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Illinois or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist school, based on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several provide additional options for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Franklin IL employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Programs

This is no different for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a large amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is usually performed in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Franklin IL home. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually discover that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just make sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

Once you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of finding and assessing Franklin IL x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Franklin IL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the Illinois xray tech colleges you are assessing have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Franklin IL healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Franklin IL healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Franklin IL home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Franklin IL colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Franklin IL, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Be an Xray Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's important to consider questions you could be asked. One of the questions that interviewers often ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to select radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to discover is not just the personal reasons you may have for being an Xray technician, but also what attributes and skills you possess that make you good at your profession. You will probably be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, in addition to a certain number of standard interview questions, so you must organize several ideas about how you would like to answer them. Since there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can address this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you in addition to the strengths you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the best choice for the position. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but write down several concepts and topics that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Reading through sample responses can help you to formulate your own thoughts, and provide ideas of what to include to enthuse the interviewer.
