And considering that the majority of states do require that x-ray technicians become licensed, depending on where you subsequently work you might need preparation to pass a licensing exam. So it’s important that you research each of the schools you are looking at so that you can compare each program. Many potential students start by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and typically gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while location and cost need to be taken into account, there are additional critical qualifiers also. For instance, you need to ask if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are reviewing are provided later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a x-ray technician does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Occupation Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, each has the same primary job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They can work in Biggs CA clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and regularly assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Biggs CA medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate also. Something to keep in mind is that Biggs CA radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many offer other alternatives for testing also. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, numerous Biggs CA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Classes

This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a large portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often provided in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Biggs CA home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online approach to education is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less costly than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of finding and assessing Biggs CA x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Biggs CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the California xray technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Biggs CA health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Biggs CA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Biggs CA residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Biggs CA schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Biggs CA, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
