No matter what the name, each has the same principal job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They may work in Danbury CT clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more expansive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate also. One thing to consider is that Danbury CT radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Connecticut or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be employed you may have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several accept additional alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Danbury CT employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is often provided in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Danbury CT residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are generally more affordable than conventional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

After you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating Danbury CT x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Danbury CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the Connecticut xray technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Danbury CT health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Danbury CT healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Danbury CT home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Danbury CT colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Danbury CT, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Want to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to consider questions you might be asked. Among the things that interviewers typically ask radiographer applicants is "What made you decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to uncover is not merely the private reasons you may have for becoming an Xray technician, but additionally what attributes and talents you possess that make you good at your profession. You will likely be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, along with a certain number of typical interview questions, so you should ready a number of strategies about how you would like to answer them. Since there are several variables that go into choosing a career, you can address this primary question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the abilities you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the leading choice for the job. Don't try to memorize an answer, but jot down some ideas and topics that relate to your own strengths and experiences. Reading through sample answers can help you to develop your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to impress the recruiter.

Radiology techs work very closely with patients, other technicians as well as the doctors and radiologists. Having interpersonal skills is a must in order to have a good work environment and provide the best possible care to patients. As has been discussed in this post, there are a number of questions that you should ask each college you are assessing before making your final decision. This is similarly true whether you opt for an online program or commute to classes on-campus. By asking the right questions you can assess and compare each school so you can narrow down your options before making your decision. And with the appropriate training and your commitment to be successful, you can achieve your goal to practice as a radiology tech in Danbury CT.

Some Background on Danbury Connecticut

Danbury, Connecticut

Danbury is a city in northern Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States, located along the Still River approximately 70 miles northeast of New York's city center. Danbury's population at the 2010 census was 80,893.[3] Danbury is the fourth most populous city in Fairfield County, and seventh among Connecticut cities. The city is within the New York combined statistical area and Bridgeport metropolitan area.

The city is named for Danbury in Essex, England, the place of origin of many of its early settlers. It is nicknamed the Hat City because of its prominent history in the hat industry; for a period in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it was the center of the American hat industry. The mineral danburite is named for Danbury.

Danbury is home to Danbury Hospital, Western Connecticut State University, Danbury Fair Mall and Danbury Municipal Airport.

Danbury was settled by colonists in 1685, when eight families moved from what are now Norwalk and Stamford, Connecticut. The Danbury area was then called Pahquioque by its namesake, the Algonquian-speaking Pahquioque Native Americans (they are believed to have been a band of the Paugusset people), who occupied lands along the Still River. Bands were often identified by such geographic designation but they were associated with the larger nation by culture and language).

One of the original English settlers was Samuel Benedict, who bought land from the Paquioque in 1685, along with his brother James Benedict, James Beebe, and Judah Gregory. This area was also called Paquiack ("open plain" or "cleared land") by the Paquioque.[4] In recognition of the wetlands, the settlers chose the name Swampfield for their town. In October 1687, the general court decreed the name Danbury. The general court appointed a committee to lay out the new town's boundaries. A survey was made in 1693, and a formal town patent was granted in 1702.
