No matter what the name, each has the same major job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They may practice in Scott City KS hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

X-Ray Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to consider is that Scott City KS radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can typically be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Kansas or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be working you may need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several offer other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, many Scott City KS employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Clinical training is often conducted in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Scott City KS residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually find that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently cheaper than on-campus alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just confirm that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

As soon as you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of locating and evaluating Scott City KS x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when comparing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Scott City KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the Kansas radiology technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Scott City KS medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Scott City KS healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Scott City KS home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Scott City KS colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the x-ray tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Scott City KS, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to consider questions you may be asked. One of the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer candidates is "What made you decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not just the private reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and talents you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, as well as a certain number of typical interview questions, so you should prepare several ideas about how you want to respond to them. Given that there are so many factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this primary question in a number of ways. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession interests you as well as the abilities you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the best choice for the position. Don't try to memorize an answer, but take down some concepts and anecdotes that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample responses can help you to develop your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to impress the recruiter.
