X-Ray Tech Work Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, they all have the identical primary job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They can practice in Winslow AZ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also frequently assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Winslow AZ health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Winslow AZ radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Arizona or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several approve other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Winslow AZ employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

This is no different for online degree programs. Practical training is often performed in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Winslow AZ home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are generally more affordable than conventional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just confirm that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

As soon as you have selected the type of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing Winslow AZ x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Winslow AZ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the Arizona radiology technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Winslow AZ healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Winslow AZ healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Winslow AZ residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Winslow AZ colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Winslow AZ, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Some Background on Winslow Arizona

Winslow, Arizona

Winslow (Navajo: Béésh Sinil) is a city in Navajo County, Arizona, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population of the city is 9,655.[2]

Winslow was named for either Edward F. Winslow, president of St. Louis and San Francisco Rail Road, which owned one half of the old Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, or Tom Winslow, a prospector who lived in the area.[4]

The last Harvey House (La Posada Hotel) opened in 1930. It was designed by Mary Colter. The hotel closed in 1957 and was used by the Santa Fe Railway for offices. The railroad abandoned La Posada in 1994 and announced plans to tear it down. It was bought and restored by Allan Affeldt[5] and it currently serves as a hotel.[6]

U.S. Route 66 was originally routed through the city. A contract to build Interstate 40 as a bypass north of Winslow was awarded at the end of 1977. I-40 replaced U.S. Route 66 in Arizona in its entirety.

Winslow achieved national fame in 1972 in the Eagles / Jackson Browne song “Take it Easy” which has the line “standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona."
