So it’s essential that you assess each of the colleges you are considering in order to compare each program. Next, they compare tuition and typically settle on the most affordable cost. But while expense and location need to be taken into account, there are additional critical qualifiers also. For example, you need to find out whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are examining are presented later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology tech does and the credentials and training options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Career Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the same fundamental job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They may work in Big Bear City CA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and also regularly analyze its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Big Bear City CA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to consider is that Big Bear City CA radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number offer other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, numerous Big Bear City CA employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Big Bear City 92314As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your online degree, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is typically carried out in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Big Bear City CA residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually discover that the online style of education is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online programs are generally less expensive than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just be sure that the online college you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

As soon as you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of finding and assessing Big Bear City CA x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Big Bear City CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the California xray tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Big Bear City CA health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Big Bear City CA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Big Bear City CA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Big Bear City CA colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Big Bear City CA, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's a good idea to consider questions you may be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers often ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is hoping to learn is not merely the personal reasons you might have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and skills you possess that make you good at your profession. You will likely be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, as well as a significant number of general interview questions, so you should prepare some approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Considering there are numerous factors that go into choosing a career, you can answer this primary question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the profession appeals to you in addition to the strengths you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the best choice for the job. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but write down a few ideas and talking points that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Going over sample answers can help you to develop your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to include to impress the interviewer.

Some Background on Big Bear City California

Big Bear City, California

Big Bear City is an unincorporated town in San Bernardino County, California, United States along the east shore of Big Bear Lake and surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest. It is located 27 miles (43 km) northeast of the city of San Bernardino, and immediately east of the incorporated city of Big Bear Lake. Its population was 12,304 at the 2010 census, up from 5,779 at the 2000 census. The makeup of Big Bear City is mostly residential with smaller houses and cabins laid out in typical square block fashion.

Despite the name, Big Bear City is not an incorporated city, and should not be confused with the adjacent incorporated city of Big Bear Lake.

Big Bear got its name due to the large number of grizzly bears that once roamed the area.[4] Although grizzly bears went extinct in the valley at the turn of the 20th century, there are still thousands of black bears found in Big Bear Valley.[5]

The first humans to inhabit Big Bear Valley were the Serrano Indians, who trace their beginnings to Bear Valley.[6]Serrano means mountaineers, or those of the Sierras.[7] The Serrano people that settled much of the San Bernardino Mountains, called themselves Yuhaviatam, or: people of the pines.

It is estimated that the Serrano natives first settled in Big Bear between 1,500 and 2,000 years ago.[8] The Serranos had both winter and summer settlements throughout the area. While their winter village was located in Lucerne Valley, they relocated to villages in the San Bernardino mountains during summer, as the altitude provided cooler temperatures. Villages were often located by rivers and lakes, however, mountain hunting camps were also established on higher elevations. Besides hunting, they also consumed pinyon nuts, mesquite beans, screw-beans, juniper berries and seeds. One of four major Serrano ethnographic sites was located in Big Bear City, called: Kayah-pia-t. Big Bear, and Lucerne Valley clans, both belonged to the same tribe: the Coyote Pervetum.[9]
