These questions and others you should ask the schools you are evaluating are provided later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic technician does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, each has the identical primary job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They can work in Lanett AL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are additionally expected to retain complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. Radiology Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Lanett AL radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several approve other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Lanett AL employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Lanett 36863As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is usually conducted in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Lanett AL home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just be sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiographer Programs

After you have selected the type of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating Lanett AL x-ray tech schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a material factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Lanett AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the Alabama radiology tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Lanett AL healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Lanett AL healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Lanett AL home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Lanett AL schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Lanett AL, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's a good idea to review questions you might be asked.
