And considering that most states do mandate that radiology technicians become licensed, depending on where you subsequently work you might need training to pass a licensing test. So it’s imperative that you investigate each of the schools you are looking at so that you can compare each program. Most students begin by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and often gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while location and cost need to be taken into account, there are other critical qualifications as well. For example, you need to ask if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the colleges you are examining are provided later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a x-ray technician does and the degrees and training options that are available.

Radiology Technician Work Summary

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the same primary job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They may work in Manhattan KS clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also frequently assess its performance and safety. They are also required to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Manhattan KS health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that Manhattan KS radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several provide other options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Manhattan KS employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Classes

This is no different for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually provided in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Manhattan KS home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just make sure that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiographer Schools

When you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing Manhattan KS x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material variable as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Manhattan KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the Kansas radiology technician schools you are interested in have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Manhattan KS health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Manhattan KS healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Manhattan KS home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Manhattan KS colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Manhattan KS, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you could be asked. Some Background on Manhattan Kansas

Manhattan, Kansas

Manhattan is a city in northeastern Kansas in the United States at the junction of the Kansas River and Big Blue River. It is the county seat[6] of Riley County, although it extends into Pottawatomie County. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 52,281.[7]

The city was founded by settlers from the New England Emigrant Aid Company as a Free-State town in the 1850s, during the Bleeding Kansas era. Nicknamed "The Little Apple" as a play on New York City's "Big Apple", Manhattan is best known as the home of Kansas State University and has a distinct college town atmosphere.

Manhattan Regional Airport (MHK) is the second busiest commercial airport in Kansas. Eight miles (13 km) west of the city is Fort Riley, a United States Army post.

Before settlement by European-Americans in the 1850s, the land where Manhattan sits was home to Native American tribes.[8] Most recently, from 1780 to 1830 it was home to the Kaw people (also known as the Kansa).[8] The Kaw settlement was called Blue Earth Village (Manyinkatuhuudje).[8] It was named after the river the tribe called the Great Blue Earth River – today known as the Big Blue River – which intersected with the Kansas River by their village.[8] Blue Earth Village was the site of a large battle between the Kaw and the Pawnee in 1812.[8]

The Kaw tribe ceded ownership of this land in a treaty signed at the Shawnee Methodist Mission on January 14, 1846.[8][9]
