But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and training options that are available.

Radiology Technician Career Summary

They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the identical major job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They can work in Spanish Fort AL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and frequently evaluate its performance and safety. They are also required to retain detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Spanish Fort AL health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to consider is that Spanish Fort AL radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many offer other options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Spanish Fort AL employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Spanish Fort 36527As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is often conducted in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Spanish Fort AL home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

Once you have chosen the type of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of finding and assessing Spanish Fort AL x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Spanish Fort AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the Alabama xray tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Spanish Fort AL healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Spanish Fort AL healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Spanish Fort AL residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Spanish Fort AL schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Spanish Fort AL, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Be an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to consider questions you might be asked. One of the things that interviewers frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a profession?".
