These inquiries and others you must ask the colleges you are examining are presented later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic technician does and the credentials and training choices that are available.

X-Ray Tech Occupation Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical fundamental job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They can work in Tonganoxie KS clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and frequently analyze its performance and safety. They are additionally expected to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Tonganoxie KS health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to bear in mind is that Tonganoxie KS radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can frequently be satisfied by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Kansas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Tonganoxie KS employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Tonganoxie 66086As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually performed in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Tonganoxie KS home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are often cheaper than traditional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just make sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

When you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Tonganoxie KS x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining variable also. But along with cost and location, what else should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Tonganoxie KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the Kansas xray tech programs you are evaluating have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Tonganoxie KS healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Tonganoxie KS healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Tonganoxie KS residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Tonganoxie KS schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Tonganoxie KS, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Radiology Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to review questions you could be asked. One of the questions that interviewers typically ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not only the personal reasons you might have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and abilities you have that make you good at your profession. You will likely be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, in addition to a certain number of general interview questions, so you must prepare several ideas about how you want to answer them. Because there are so many factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a number of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession interests you as well as the strengths you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but write down some ideas and anecdotes that pertain to your own experiences and strengths. Reading through sample responses can help you to develop your own thoughts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to impress the recruiter.
