So it’s imperative that you investigate each of the colleges you are looking at in order to compare each program. A number of prospective students begin by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and often gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while expense and location must be considered, there are additional critical qualifiers also. For example, you must find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internship programs. These questions and others you must ask the colleges you are evaluating are presented later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and training options that are offered.

Radiology Tech Occupation Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the same major job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They can work in Fontana CA clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also routinely analyze its performance and safety. They are additionally required to retain complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Fontana CA medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate also. Something to consider is that Fontana CA radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification requirements in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number provide additional alternatives for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Fontana CA employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Programs

This is no different for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is typically performed in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Fontana CA residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online style of learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are generally more affordable than on-campus alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

As soon as you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Fontana CA x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Fontana CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the California radiology technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Fontana CA medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Fontana CA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Fontana CA home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Fontana CA colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Fontana CA, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

Some Background on Fontana California

Fontana, California

Fontana (/fɒnˈtænə/) is a city of 207,460 residents in San Bernardino County, California. Founded by Azariel Blanchard Miller in 1913,[2] it remained essentially rural until World War II, when entrepreneur Henry J. Kaiser built a large steel mill in the area. It is now a regional hub of the trucking industry, with Interstate 10 and State Route 210 transecting the city from east to west, and Interstate 15 passing diagonally through its northwestern quadrant.

It is home to the largest of the San Bernardino County system libraries, a renovated historic theater, a municipal park, and the Auto Club Speedway on the site of the Kaiser Steel Mill. Fontana also hosts the Fontana Days Half Marathon and 5K run. This race is the fastest half-marathon course in the world.[14]

The United States Census Bureau estimated Fontana's 2016 population at 207,460, making it the second most populous city in San Bernardino County and the 19th largest in the state.[10] The name fontana is Italian for fountain or water source, being in close proximity to the Santa Ana River to the east.

Fontana was founded in 1913 by Azariel Blanchard Miller.[2][15] Within a few years it became an agricultural town of citrus orchards, vineyards and chicken ranches astride U.S. Route 66 (now known as Foothill Boulevard). The Fontana area was radically transformed during World War II when Henry J. Kaiser built one of only two steel mills west of the Mississippi River outside the city limits. To provide for the plant workers' health needs, Henry J. Kaiser constructed the Fontana Kaiser Permanente medical facility, now the largest managed care organization in the United States.

In the 1950s and '60s, Fontana was home to a drag racing strip that was a venue in the NHRA circuit. Mickey Thompson's Fontana International Dragway was also referred to as Fontana Drag City or Fontana Drag Strip. The original Fontana strip is long since defunct, but the owners of NASCAR's new Auto Club Speedway opened a new NHRA-sanctioned drag strip in Fontana in mid-2006 to resurrect Fontana's drag-racing heritage.
