And considering that the majority of states do mandate that x-ray techs become licensed, based on where you ultimately practice you may need preparation to pass a licensing examination. So it’s important that you investigate each of the schools you are looking at in order to compare each program. Next, they check tuition and often settle on the most affordable cost. But while location and cost must be taken into consideration, there are other important qualifiers also. For instance, you must find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internship programs. These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are evaluating are presented later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray tech does and the credentials and education choices that are available.

X-Ray Technician Job Description

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, each has the same major job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They can work in Buttonwillow CA clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment plus routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are additionally expected to keep detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Buttonwillow CA medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. One thing to keep in mind is that Buttonwillow CA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be employed you might have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many accept other options for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, many Buttonwillow CA employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Buttonwillow 93206As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Buttonwillow CA residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are often cheaper than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Buttonwillow CA x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? Most xray technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Buttonwillow CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the California xray technician schools you are assessing have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Buttonwillow CA medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Buttonwillow CA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Buttonwillow CA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Buttonwillow CA schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Buttonwillow CA, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Desire to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to consider questions you could be asked. One of the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer candidates is "What drove you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not just the personal reasons you might have for being an X-Ray tech, but additionally what characteristics and skills you have that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, as well as a significant number of routine interview questions, so you must prepare a number of approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Given that there are numerous factors that go into choosing a career, you can address this fundamental question in a number of ways. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the abilities you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but take down several ideas and anecdotes that relate to your own strengths and experiences. Going over sample responses can help you to develop your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to include to impress the recruiter.
