Clayton CA x-ray tech internship programCongrats regarding your decision to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Clayton CA so you can learn to be a radiology technologist. And now that you have made a decision to enter the gratifying field of healthcare, how do you set about picking the right school and program to ensure that you will receive the appropriate training to become a qualified professional? And because most states do mandate that x-ray technicians become licensed, based on where you subsequently practice you may require training to pass a licensing exam. So it’s imperative that you assess each of the schools you are considering so that you can evaluate each program. Many potential students start by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and frequently gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while location and cost need to be taken into consideration, there are additional critical qualifications also. For instance, you need to find out if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you must ask the colleges you are examining are provided later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a radiology technician does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Work Description

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the identical principal job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They can practice in Clayton CA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and regularly analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Clayton CA health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Clayton CAThe basic prerequisite for attending an x-ray tech program is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable also. One thing to bear in mind is that Clayton CA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, based on the state where you will be working you may need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several accept additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Clayton CA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Clayton 94517As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Clayton CA home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than traditional options. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just make sure that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

As soon as you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating Clayton CA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Clayton CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the California radiology technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Clayton CA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Clayton CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Clayton CA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Clayton CA colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Clayton CA, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Become an Xray Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to consider questions you might be asked. One of the questions that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not merely the private reasons you might have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and abilities you have that make you outstanding at your profession. You will probably be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, along with a certain number of typical interview questions, so you need to prepare several strategies about how you would like to address them. Because there are numerous factors that go into selecting a career, you can address this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work appeals to you along with the abilities you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but write down some ideas and topics that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Reading through sample answers can help you to prepare your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to discuss to impress the interviewer.

Some Background on Clayton California

Clayton, California

Clayton (formerly Clayton's and Claytonville[8]) is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 10,897 as of the 2010 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2), all land.

Clayton is located at the foot of Mt. Diablo State Park.[citation needed]

This region experiences hot and dry summers. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Clayton has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps.[9]

In 1857, the town of Clayton was laid out and founded by Joel Henry Clayton (1812–1872) and his two younger brothers. Clayton was born in Bugsworth, now Buxworth, in the United Kingdom, and emigrated to the United States in 1837. After years in other states he settled down with his wife Margaret (1820–1908) at his town at the foot of Mount Diablo, where he and his family prospered. Clayton was named after Joel Henry Clayton, although only by the flip of a coin. Joel Clayton and Charles Rhine cofounded the town, and each wanted to name it after himself. If Charles had won it would have become Rhinesville, but Joel Clayton won. Joel and his wife Margaret both died in Clayton, and were buried in Live Oak Cemetery in what is now Concord, CA.[10]
