Regardless of the name, each has the identical principal job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They may practice in Covina CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to consider is that Covina CA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist college, based on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number accept additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Covina CA employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less costly than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just make certain that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

After you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing Covina CA x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material factor as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Covina CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the California radiology tech colleges you are assessing have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Covina CA health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Covina CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Covina CA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Covina CA schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Covina CA, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Some Background on Covina California

Covina, California

Covina is a city in Los Angeles County, California, about 22 miles (35 km) east of downtown Los Angeles, in the San Gabriel Valley region. The population was 47,796 at the 2010 census, up from 46,837 at the 2000 census. The city's slogan, "One Mile Square and All There", was coined when the incorporated area of the city was only (some say slightly less than) one square mile.

Covina is often confused with West Covina which is actually larger in both area and population, located to its south and westside. Irwindale lies to the west, as well as the unincorporated area of Vincent, and the city of Baldwin Park. Azusa and Glendora are to the north, the unincorporated community of Charter Oak to the northeast, San Dimas to the east, the unincorporated areas of Ramona and Via Verde, and the city of Pomona to the southeast.

Present day Covina was originally within the homelands of the indigenous Tongva people for 5,000 to 8,000 years. In the 18th century it the became part of Rancho La Puente in Alta California, a 1770s Spanish colonial and 1842 Mexican land grants.

The city of Covina was founded in 1882 by Joseph Swift Phillips, on a 2,000-acre (8.1 km2) tract that was purchased from the holdings of John Edward Hollenbeck, one of the 1842 grantees of Rancho La Puente. In 1875 Hollenbeck had purchased a failed coffee plantation from 3 Costa Rican brothers, Pedro Maria Badilla, Julian Badilla, and Pedro Antonio Badilla, the latter who purchased it from the heirs of Hollenbeck's 1842 co-grantee John A. Rowland.[9]
