Encino CA x-ray tech internship programCongratulations regarding your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Encino CA so you can learn to be a radiology technologist. And now that you have chosen to go into the rewarding field of healthcare, just how do you go about selecting the right college and program to ensure that you will obtain the proper training to become a skilled professional? And because most states do require that radiology technicians become licensed, depending on where you ultimately practice you may require preparation to pass a licensing examination. So it’s essential that you research each of the colleges you are looking at in order to compare each program. A number of students start by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and often gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while cost and location must be taken into consideration, there are additional important qualifications as well. For example, you should ask whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the colleges you are reviewing are provided later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray tech does and the credentials and training options that are available.

X-Ray Tech Occupation Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They may practice in Encino CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment plus routinely analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Encino CA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable as well. Something to keep in mind is that Encino CA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several offer additional options for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Encino CA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Encino 91316As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is often provided in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Encino CA residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are generally less costly than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online college you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiographer Programs

Once you have chosen the type of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and evaluating Encino CA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Encino CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the California xray technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Encino CA health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Encino CA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Encino CA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Encino CA colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Encino CA, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Become a Radiology Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to review questions you could be asked. Some Background on Encino California

Encino, Los Angeles

Encino is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, California, United States.

In 1769, the Spanish Portola expedition, first Europeans to see inland areas of California, traveled north through Sepulveda pass into the San Fernando Valley on August 5 and stayed two nights at a native village near what is now Los Encinos State Historic Park. Fray Juan Crespi, a Franciscan missionary travelling with the expedition, named the valley "El Valle de Santa Catalina de Bononia de Los Encinos" (The Valley of St. Catherine of Bononia of the Oaks).[1] All of Crespi's name was later dropped except "Encino".

Rancho Los Encinos (Ranch of Oak Trees) was established in 1845 when a large parcel of former Mission San Fernando land was granted to three Mission Indians by governor Pio Pico. Many ranchos were created after the secularization of the California missions, which began in 1834. Encino derives its name from the rancho.[2]

The 2000 U.S. census counted 41,905 residents in the 9.5-square-mile (25 km2) Encino neighborhood — 4,411 inhabitants per square mile (1,703/km2), among the lowest population densities for the city but average for the county. In 2008, the city estimated that the resident population had increased to 44,581.[3]

In 2000 the median age for residents was 42, considered old for city and county neighborhoods; the percentages of residents aged 50 and older were among the county's highest.[3]
