These inquiries and others you must ask the schools you are evaluating are provided later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a x-ray technician does and the credentials and training options that are available.

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the same principal job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They may work in Humboldt IA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and also regularly assess its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to keep detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Humboldt IA radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Iowa or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number offer other options for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Humboldt IA employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Programs

This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often carried out in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Humboldt IA residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online approach to education is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are generally more affordable than traditional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just make sure that the online program you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

After you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of looking for and assessing Humboldt IA x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Humboldt IA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the Iowa radiology technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Humboldt IA medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Humboldt IA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Humboldt IA home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Humboldt IA colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Humboldt IA, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Some Background on Humboldt Iowa

Humboldt, Iowa

Humboldt is a city in Humboldt County, Iowa, United States. The population was 4,690 at the 2010 census, gaining 238 people since the 2000 census.

Frank A. Gotch Park (just south of present-day Humboldt and Dakota City) was a location of prehistoric and some Dakota Indian villages near where the two forks of the Des Moines River meet. During westward expansion in the 1800s, this area is thought to be the location of a fort/trading post called Fort Confederation. According to Federal records in 1825, permission was granted to build the fort to trade with the Ihanktonwan Dakota (Yankton Sioux) Indians. Information about the exact details of the fort are unclear, such as if American or French Canadian or Metis traders built it, bringing up many questions about this fort.[4][5]

The founder of modern Humboldt, Stephen Harris Taft, laid out the plans for Springvale, the original name of the town, in 1863. It was named Springvale because of the several natural springs found near the Des Moines River. Taft had very big plans for the community, and expected many intellectuals from the East to move to his new community.

Taft had five goals for his idyllic community.[6]

Taft undertook the great task of turning empty, blooming prairie into the community of his dreams. He brought out a group of settlers (including a doctor) in 1863, and they lived together in the few houses that had been built. The grist mill was built, known now as the Corydon Brown House.[7] The first few years were spent laying out the town. Taft wanted very wide boulevards throughout the town, and the community is still known for its streets.[8] Taft also edited the Humboldt County True Democrat through the offices of the Fort Dodge Sentinel in Fort Dodge.[6]
