These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are reviewing are provided later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology technician does and the credentials and training choices that are available.

Radiology Tech Career Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical principal job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They can practice in Millport AL hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and routinely assess its performance and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Millport AL health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to consider is that Millport AL radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may frequently be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Alabama or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number approve additional options for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, numerous Millport AL employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Colleges

This is no different for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually carried out in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Millport AL home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online style of education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are often cheaper than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating Millport AL x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Millport AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Alabama radiology tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Millport AL healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Millport AL healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Millport AL residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Millport AL schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Millport AL, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to reflect on questions you could be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers typically ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not only the personal reasons you might have for being a radiology technician, but also what qualities and talents you have that make you outstanding at your profession. You will likely be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, in addition to a certain number of standard interview questions, so you must organize a number of approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Considering there are so many variables that go into selecting a career, you can address this primary question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the work appeals to you as well as the talents you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the position. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but take down a few concepts and topics that relate to your own strengths and experiences. Going over sample responses can assist you to develop your own thoughts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to impress the recruiter.
