But while location and cost must be considered, there are additional important qualifiers as well. For example, you should ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internship programs. These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are considering are presented later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology tech does and the degrees and education choices that are available.

Radiology Technician Job Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They can practice in South Lake Tahoe CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment plus routinely assess its performance and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As South Lake Tahoe CA health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Tech Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to bear in mind is that South Lake Tahoe CA radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several provide other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, many South Lake Tahoe CA employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in South Lake Tahoe 96150As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is often carried out in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your South Lake Tahoe CA residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically discover that the online approach to learning is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are frequently cheaper than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just be sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

Once you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating South Lake Tahoe CA x-ray tech schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many South Lake Tahoe CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the California xray technician programs you are assessing have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the South Lake Tahoe CA medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with South Lake Tahoe CA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their South Lake Tahoe CA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the South Lake Tahoe CA colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in South Lake Tahoe CA, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
