Bald Knob AR x-ray tech internship programBest wishes regarding your decision to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Bald Knob AR in order to train to be a radiologic technician. But now that you have decided to enter the satisfying field of healthcare, how do you tackle picking the right college and program to ensure that you will receive the proper training to become a qualified professional? And because the majority of states do mandate that radiology technicians become licensed, depending on where you subsequently practice you may require preparation to pass a licensing examination. So it’s imperative that you research each of the schools you are considering in order to compare each program. Many prospective students begin by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and usually gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while location and cost should be taken into account, there are other important qualifications as well. For example, you should find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the colleges you are reviewing are presented later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic technician does and the degrees and education choices that are available.

X-Ray Tech Job Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same major job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They can work in Bald Knob AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and also routinely analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Bald Knob AR medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to keep in mind is that Bald Knob AR radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several provide other options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Bald Knob AR employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Bald Knob 72010As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a large portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often performed in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Bald Knob AR home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of education is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than conventional options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just be sure that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Programs

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and assessing Bald Knob AR x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important variable as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bald Knob AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the Arkansas radiology technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Bald Knob AR medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Bald Knob AR healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Bald Knob AR home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Bald Knob AR schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Bald Knob AR, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Desire to Become a Radiologic Technologist?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to consider questions you may be asked. Among the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not just the private reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but additionally what characteristics and talents you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, in addition to a certain number of routine interview questions, so you should prepare some strategies about how you want to address them. Considering there are so many variables that go into choosing a career, you can address this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When readying an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession interests you in addition to the talents you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the leading choice for the position. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but jot down a few concepts and talking points that relate to your own strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample responses can help you to prepare your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to include to wow the recruiter.
