And considering that most states do mandate that x-ray technicians become licensed, depending on where you ultimately work you may need training to pass a licensing examination. So it’s imperative that you assess each of the schools you are considering in order to compare each program. Many students begin by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and often settle on the lowest cost. But while cost and location should be taken into consideration, there are other critical qualifiers as well. For example, you should find out if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are reviewing are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology tech does and the degrees and training choices that are offered.

Radiology Tech Job Summary

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the identical fundamental job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They may practice in Wadley AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also routinely evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Wadley AL health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that Wadley AL radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Alabama or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Wadley AL employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Wadley 36276As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often conducted in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Wadley AL residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online approach to education is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are often more affordable than conventional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just confirm that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Programs

As soon as you have decided on the type of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and evaluating Wadley AL x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Wadley AL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the Alabama radiology tech schools you are reviewing have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Wadley AL healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Wadley AL healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Wadley AL residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Wadley AL schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Wadley AL, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
