But while location and cost must be considered, there are other important qualifications also. For example, you need to ask whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are examining are presented later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiology technician does and the degrees and education options that are offered.

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the same primary job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They may practice in Youngtown AZ hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also routinely analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Youngtown AZ health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that Youngtown AZ radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Arizona or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many provide other options for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Youngtown AZ employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Schools

This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is typically conducted in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Youngtown AZ home. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online style of education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are often cheaper than conventional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

When you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and assessing Youngtown AZ x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material variable as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Youngtown AZ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the Arizona radiology tech programs you are assessing have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Youngtown AZ health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Youngtown AZ healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Youngtown AZ home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Youngtown AZ schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the x-ray tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Youngtown AZ, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
