And since most states do require that radiology techs become licensed, based on where you ultimately practice you may require training to pass a licensing examination. So it’s important that you assess each of the colleges you are looking at so that you can compare each program. Many potential students start by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and typically settle on the lowest cost. But while expense and location must be taken into consideration, there are additional critical qualifications also. For example, you should find out whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These inquiries and others you must ask the colleges you are considering are presented later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray tech does and the credentials and training options that are available.

Radiology Technician Occupation Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, they all have the same fundamental job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, such as mammography. They can work in Bunkie LA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment plus routinely assess its performance and safety. They are additionally required to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Bunkie LA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degrees

x-ray machine in Bunkie LAThe basic requirement for enrolling in a radiology tech college is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be acceptable also. Something to consider is that Bunkie LA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Louisiana or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Bunkie LA employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Bunkie 71322As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically performed in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Bunkie LA residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just make certain that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

When you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of searching for and assessing Bunkie LA x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Bunkie LA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the Louisiana radiology technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Bunkie LA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Bunkie LA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Bunkie LA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Bunkie LA colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Bunkie LA, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's important to review questions you might be asked. Among the things that recruiters frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not only the private reasons you may have for being an Xray technician, but also what attributes and abilities you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, in addition to a certain number of general interview questions, so you must organize a number of strategies about how you want to respond to them. Considering there are several variables that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the work appeals to you as well as the strengths you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't try to memorize an answer, but write down a few concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample responses can help you to develop your own thoughts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the interviewer.
