And now that you have decided to enter the satisfying field of healthcare, exactly how do you set about selecting the right college and program to ensure that you will get the proper training to become a qualified professional? And since most states do mandate that radiology technicians become licensed, based on where you ultimately work you might require preparation to pass a licensing exam. So it’s important that you assess each of the schools you are looking at in order to evaluate each program. Most students begin by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and typically gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while expense and location must be considered, there are other important qualifiers also. For instance, you need to ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are considering are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic tech does and the degrees and training choices that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Occupation Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the same major job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They can practice in Fairfield CA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and regularly evaluate its performance and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Fairfield CA medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate also. Something to keep in mind is that Fairfield CA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer other options for testing also. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Fairfield CA employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Classes

This is the same for online degree programs. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is usually provided in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Fairfield CA home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are generally cheaper than conventional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just make certain that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating Fairfield CA x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important variable also. But along with location and cost, what more should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Fairfield CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the California radiology tech colleges you are interested in have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Fairfield CA healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Fairfield CA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Fairfield CA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Fairfield CA schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Fairfield CA, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to consider questions you may be asked. Among the things that interviewers often ask radiographer candidates is "What made you choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not just the private reasons you may have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and abilities you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, in addition to a significant number of routine interview questions, so you should organize a number of strategies about how you would like to address them. Considering there are several variables that go into selecting a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a number of ways. When readying an answer, try to include the reasons the profession appeals to you along with the talents you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but jot down a few concepts and talking points that relate to your personal experiences and strengths. Going over sample answers can help you to prepare your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the recruiter.
