So it’s imperative that you investigate each of the schools you are looking at so that you can compare each program. Most potential students start by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and typically settle on the lowest cost. But while location and cost must be taken into account, there are other critical qualifiers also. For example, you need to ask whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are reviewing are provided later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiology tech does and the credentials and training options that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Job Summary

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the identical primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They can work in Fullerton CA clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also routinely analyze its performance and safety. They are also expected to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Fullerton CA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to consider is that Fullerton CA radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number approve additional options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Fullerton CA employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Fullerton 92831As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Fullerton CA residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually discover that the online style of education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than traditional options. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just confirm that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

When you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating Fullerton CA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important factor also. But along with cost and location, what more should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Fullerton CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the California xray technician programs you are interested in have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Fullerton CA medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Fullerton CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Fullerton CA home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Fullerton CA colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Fullerton CA, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Be an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to consider questions you could be asked. What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not just the personal reasons you may have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but also what qualities and abilities you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. Some Background on Fullerton California

Fullerton, California

Fullerton is a city located in northern Orange County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 135,161.[6]

Fullerton was founded in 1887. It secured the land on behalf of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Historically it was a center of agriculture, notably groves of Valencia oranges and other citrus crops; petroleum extraction; transportation; and manufacturing. It is home to numerous higher educational institutions, particularly California State University, Fullerton and Fullerton College. From the mid-1940s through the late 1990s, Fullerton was home to a large industrial base made up of aerospace contractors, canneries, paper products manufacturers, and is considered to be the birthplace of the electric guitar, due in a large part to Leo Fender. The headquarters of Vons, which is owned by Albertsons, is located in Fullerton near the Fullerton-Anaheim line.

Evidence of prehistoric animal habitation, such as saber-toothed cats and mammoths, is present in Ralph B. Clark Regional Park in the northwest of the city.[8]Europeans first passed through the area in 1769 when Gaspar de Portolà led a Spanish expedition north to Monterey. From the description recorded in the diary of Father Juan Crespi, it seems likely that the party camped on July 29 near present-day Laguna Lake, in the Sunny Hills area.[9]

After establishment of Mission San Gabriel Arcangel in 1771, the local Tongva people were dubbed "Gabrieliños" by the Spanish. In 1837, the Fullerton area became part of Rancho San Juan Cajón de Santa Ana, granted to Juan Pacifico Ontiveros, a Spanish soldier.

Ontiveros began to sell parcels of the Rancho to migrant Americans settling and developing California in the aftermath of the 1849 Gold Rush, including Massachusetts native Abel Stearns. In the 1860s, Stearns sold in turn to Domingo Bastanchury, a Basque shepherd.
