But first, let’s explore what a radiology technician does and the degrees and training choices that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Career Summary

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They can practice in Hope AR clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and regularly evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also expected to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Hope AR health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be acceptable also. Something to consider is that Hope AR radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Arkansas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number offer additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, many Hope AR employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it could increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Hope 71801As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is usually performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Hope AR home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

After you have chosen the type of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating Hope AR x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Hope AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Arkansas xray technician programs you are interested in have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Hope AR healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Hope AR healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Hope AR home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Hope AR schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Hope AR, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
