Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that Kodiak AK radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Alaska or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be working you may need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several provide other alternatives for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Kodiak AK employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Colleges

This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually provided in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Kodiak AK home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just make certain that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of locating and assessing Kodiak AK x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material variable also. But along with location and cost, what else should you factor in when comparing colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Kodiak AK employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the Alaska xray tech schools you are reviewing have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Kodiak AK medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kodiak AK healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Kodiak AK home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Kodiak AK schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Kodiak AK, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to reflect on questions you may be asked.
