These questions and others you should ask the colleges you are considering are provided later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray tech does and the credentials and training choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Occupation Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, each has the same principal job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They can practice in Marshall AR hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also regularly evaluate its performance and safety. They are additionally expected to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Marshall AR health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to consider is that Marshall AR radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several approve other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Marshall AR employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Classes

This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is typically performed in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Marshall AR home. Students who keep working while earning their degree often discover that the online style of education is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just be sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

When you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating Marshall AR x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a material factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Marshall AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the Arkansas xray technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Marshall AR healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Marshall AR healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Marshall AR home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Marshall AR colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Marshall AR, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
