Sterling KS x-ray tech internship programBest wishes on your decision to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Sterling KS so you can learn to be a radiology technologist. And now that you have decided to go into the rewarding field of healthcare, how do you tackle picking the right school and program to ensure that you will obtain the appropriate training to become a skilled practitioner? And considering that most states do require that x-ray technicians become licensed, based on where you subsequently practice you might need preparation to pass a licensing test. So it’s imperative that you assess each of the schools you are looking at so that you can evaluate each program. Many prospective students begin by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and often settle on the most affordable cost. But while cost and location should be taken into account, there are other significant qualifiers as well. For example, you must find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are reviewing are provided later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiologic technician does and the degrees and training choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Work Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They can work in Sterling KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment plus regularly analyze its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Sterling KS health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more expansive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable also. One thing to keep in mind is that Sterling KS radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Kansas or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number approve other options for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Sterling KS employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Sterling 67579As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically provided in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Sterling KS residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of learning is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are often cheaper than conventional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just make sure that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

As soon as you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Sterling KS x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Sterling KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the Kansas radiology tech programs you are evaluating have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Sterling KS health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Sterling KS healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Sterling KS home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Sterling KS colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Sterling KS, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's a good idea to consider questions you may be asked. What the interviewer is trying to discover is not just the personal reasons you might have for being an Xray technician, but also what characteristics and abilities you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, as well as a significant number of general interview questions, so you should organize some ideas about how you would like to answer them. Given that there are several variables that go into choosing a career, you can answer this primary question in a variety of ways. When preparing an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession appeals to you along with the strengths you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the position. Don't try to memorize an answer, but take down some ideas and anecdotes that relate to your personal experiences and strengths.
