Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to consider is that East Granby CT radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Connecticut or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be practicing you might have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many approve additional options for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous East Granby CT employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. This is no different for online degree schools. Clinical training is typically carried out in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the comfort of your East Granby CT residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just make sure that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

When you have selected the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and assessing East Granby CT x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? Most xray tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many East Granby CT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the Connecticut xray technician schools you are interested in have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the East Granby CT health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with East Granby CT healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their East Granby CT home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the East Granby CT colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in East Granby CT, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
