And since most states do mandate that x-ray techs become licensed, depending on where you subsequently practice you may require preparation to pass a licensing examination. So it’s imperative that you investigate each of the colleges you are looking at in order to evaluate each program. Most potential students start by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and frequently gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while location and cost should be taken into consideration, there are other critical qualifiers as well. For example, you must ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internship programs. These inquiries and others you must ask the colleges you are reviewing are provided later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and education options that are available.

Radiology Tech Occupation Description

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the identical principal job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They can work in Poston AZ hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and also routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Poston AZ medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Poston AZ radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Arizona or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept other alternatives for testing also. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Poston AZ employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Degrees

This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically conducted in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Poston AZ home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are generally less expensive than traditional options. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just confirm that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

What to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

As soon as you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating Poston AZ x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most radiology technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Poston AZ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the Arizona radiology tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Poston AZ health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Poston AZ healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Poston AZ residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Poston AZ schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Poston AZ, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
