Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They can practice in Vail AZ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment plus regularly evaluate its performance and safety. They are additionally required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Vail AZ medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to bear in mind is that Vail AZ radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Arizona or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be working you may need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several approve other options for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, many Vail AZ employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Vail 85641As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is usually provided in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Vail AZ residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually discover that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are frequently cheaper than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just make sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

As soon as you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating Vail AZ x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? Most xray tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Vail AZ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the Arizona radiology tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Vail AZ medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Vail AZ healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Vail AZ home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Vail AZ schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Vail AZ, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Become an Xray Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's important to consider questions you might be asked. One of the things that recruiters frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not just the personal reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and skills you have that make you outstanding at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, as well as a significant number of standard interview questions, so you must prepare some strategies about how you would like to answer them. Given that there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession interests you as well as the abilities you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but jot down a few ideas and talking points that pertain to your personal experiences and strengths.
