These questions and others you must ask the colleges you are considering are presented later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic tech does and the degrees and training choices that are available.

X-Ray Tech Job Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the identical fundamental job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many opt to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They can practice in Calhan CO clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that Calhan CO radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can frequently be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Colorado or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist school, based on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many approve other alternatives for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Calhan CO employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Calhan 80808As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Calhan CO residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually discover that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less costly than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just make sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

After you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of locating and evaluating Calhan CO x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material variable also. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Calhan CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the Colorado xray tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Calhan CO healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Calhan CO healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Calhan CO residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Calhan CO schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Calhan CO, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
