Radiology Technician Career Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the same principal job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They can practice in Las Animas CO hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment plus routinely analyze its performance and safety. They are also expected to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Las Animas CO medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more extensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate also. Something to keep in mind is that Las Animas CO radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Colorado or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Las Animas CO employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Classes

So while you can still earn your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is often performed in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Las Animas CO residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than conventional options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Programs

After you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating Las Animas CO x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining factor also. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? Most xray technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Las Animas CO health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the Colorado radiology technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Las Animas CO healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Las Animas CO healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Las Animas CO home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Las Animas CO schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Las Animas CO, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
