These questions and others you should ask the schools you are examining are provided later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiology technician does and the credentials and training options that are offered.

Radiology Tech Job Summary

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the same major job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They can work in Andover CT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and also frequently assess its performance and safety. They are additionally required to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Andover CT medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Andover CT radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Connecticut or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist college, based on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several accept additional alternatives for testing also. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Andover CT employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Classes

This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Andover CT home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just make certain that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

When you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of searching for and assessing Andover CT x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important variable also. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? Most radiology technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Andover CT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the Connecticut xray technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Andover CT healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Andover CT healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Andover CT residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Andover CT colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Andover CT, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
