But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray tech does and the degrees and education choices that are available.

X-Ray Tech Career Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, each has the identical primary job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many opt to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They can practice in Grant Park IL hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and frequently evaluate its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Grant Park IL medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to keep in mind is that Grant Park IL radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Illinois or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several accept additional options for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Grant Park IL employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Schools

This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still obtain your online degree, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically conducted in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Grant Park IL home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are often cheaper than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiographer Schools

Once you have decided on the type of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Grant Park IL x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Grant Park IL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the Illinois xray tech programs you are reviewing have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Grant Park IL health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Grant Park IL healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Grant Park IL residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Grant Park IL schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Grant Park IL, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
