But while cost and location must be taken into account, there are other important qualifications as well. For example, you need to ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are examining are provided later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology technician does and the degrees and training choices that are available.

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical principal job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They can work in Melrose Park IL clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and also frequently analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Melrose Park IL medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Melrose Park IL radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Illinois or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several provide other options for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Melrose Park IL employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Melrose Park 60160As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is typically provided in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Melrose Park IL residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just make sure that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

What to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

When you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and evaluating Melrose Park IL x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of xray technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Melrose Park IL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the Illinois xray tech programs you are assessing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Melrose Park IL health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Melrose Park IL healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Melrose Park IL residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Melrose Park IL schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Melrose Park IL, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Some Background on Melrose Park Illinois

Melrose Park, Illinois

Melrose Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago,14 miles by road. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 25,411.[3] Melrose Park had long been home to a large Italian-American population.

The suburb was the home of Kiddieland Amusement Park from 1929 until 2010 (it closed in September 2009 before it was demolished in June 2010),the sign of Kiddieland was relocated to Melrose Park Library, the Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Stern Pinball, Inc., which is now the world's last manufacturer of coin-operated pinball machines, and the Melrose Park Taste home of the famous Melrose Stuffed Peppers.

According to the Encyclopedia of Chicago, in 1882 residents of a then-unincorporated portion of Proviso Township voted to establish their own municipality—called simply "Melrose" until 1893, when the "Park" was added—and population in the area began to steadily increase. The first Italian-Americans arrived in 1888. On April 19, 1920, the F4 Palm Sunday tornado cut a 328-foot-wide (100 m) path over 1,094 yards (1,000 m) through the village and killed ten people. It destroyed the Sacred Heart Church and attached convent.[4]

At the turn of the century, the population surge plateaued and industry began to stagnate; it was only after World War I that the local economy was able to recover, the result of a number of manufacturing companies setting up shop in the village. New industry, coupled with Melrose Park's prime geographic location next to the Proviso freight yards, led to a steady increase in the number of area jobs. This continued after World War II, with still more companies moving to Melrose Park. Zenith Electronics, Alberto-Culver, Jewel, and International Harvester (now Navistar) are some examples.[5] Many of these companies are still located in Melrose Park and the local industry remains stable, but Alberto-Culver no longer exists and Zenith continues to exist as a brand only today.

During the late 1990s, in an effort to attract more commerce, the village underwent major cosmetic improvements, beginning with the redesigning of all village street signs. The wooded area on both sides of Silver Creek, between Broadway and 17th Avenue along North Avenue, was almost completely excavated, the grass replaced, and wood chips were added along the bases of the remaining trees. Many busy streets were repaved and the athletic field next to the village hall was completely redone. This has helped not only to attract new businesses, but also many first-time home buyers.
