Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that Clear Lake IA radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Iowa or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be working you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many accept additional options for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Clear Lake IA employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Colleges

This is no different for online degree colleges. Clinical training is often provided in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Clear Lake IA home. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

Once you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Clear Lake IA x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a material variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Clear Lake IA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the Iowa xray tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Clear Lake IA medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Clear Lake IA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Clear Lake IA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Clear Lake IA colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Clear Lake IA, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to review questions you may be asked. One of the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer candidates is "What drove you to select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not just the personal reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and abilities you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, as well as a certain number of typical interview questions, so you need to prepare several ideas about how you want to respond to them. Because there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the abilities you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but take down some concepts and talking points that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences.
