But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic tech does and the degrees and education options that are available.

X-Ray Technician Job Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical major job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some opt to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They can work in Dysart IA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and also regularly evaluate its performance and safety. They are also expected to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Dysart IA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Dysart IA radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Iowa or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number approve other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Dysart IA employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Dysart 52224As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your degree online, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically carried out in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Dysart IA home. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just make sure that the online program you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

When you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of locating and assessing Dysart IA x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Dysart IA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the Iowa xray tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Dysart IA healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Dysart IA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Dysart IA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Dysart IA colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Dysart IA, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to review questions you may be asked. Among the things that interviewers frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to pick radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not just the private reasons you may have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what attributes and abilities you have that make you exceptional at your profession. You will likely be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, along with a significant number of standard interview questions, so you should ready some approaches about how you would like to answer them. Given that there are numerous factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the work appeals to you in addition to the talents you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the leading choice for the position. Don't try to memorize a response, but write down several concepts and talking points that pertain to your own strengths and experiences.
