  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to finish and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to consider is that Zearing IA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Iowa or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be working you may need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several approve additional options for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Zearing IA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Clinical training is usually performed in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Zearing IA residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically discover that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Topics to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

When you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating Zearing IA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important factor as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Zearing IA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the Iowa xray tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Zearing IA medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Zearing IA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Zearing IA residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Zearing IA schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Zearing IA, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to reflect on questions you could be asked.
