But first, let’s explore what a radiology tech does and the degrees and education options that are available.

Irrespective of the name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, such as mammography. • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Chetopa KS radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Kansas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several approve additional options for testing also. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Chetopa KS employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Colleges

Clinical training is often provided in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Chetopa KS home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just make sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing Chetopa KS x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when comparing colleges? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Chetopa KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the Kansas xray tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Chetopa KS medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Chetopa KS healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Chetopa KS residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Chetopa KS schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Chetopa KS, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to consider questions you might be asked. One of the things that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What made you select radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to learn is not just the personal reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and abilities you have that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, in addition to a certain number of typical interview questions, so you must organize a number of ideas about how you would like to answer them. Because there are numerous variables that go into selecting a career, you can address this primary question in a multitude of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work appeals to you as well as the strengths you possess that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the leading choice for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but jot down a few concepts and talking points that relate to your own experiences and strengths. Some Background on Chetopa Kansas

Chetopa, Kansas

Chetopa is a city in Labette County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 1,125.[6] Chetopa was named for Chief Chetopah, an Osage Indian chief. Later, the community name was shortened.[7]

The community began as an Osage village, named after its chief Chetopah, whose name in the Osage language signifies "four lodges," was an advocate of peace, the leading chief of the Little Osage tribe, and one of the chief counselors of the Osage Nation.[8]

In 1847 a trading post to exchange goods with the Osage Nation was established here by Larkin McGhee. By the time of McGhee's arrival there were three other Euro-American families plus two families with a Euro-American husband and a Cherokee wife at Chetopa. There were also many Osage there.[9]

Chetopa was the site of a September 18, 1861 battle between the 6th Kansas Cavalry under the direction of James G. Blunt and pro-slavery raiders led by John Allan Mathews, whose wife was an Osage and was culturally identified with the Osages.[10]

The first post office in Chetopa was established in April 1867.[11] In 1880, Postmaster J.M. Cavaness petitioned the removal of the ending “h” in the original spelling to become Chetopa.[12]
