  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Downs KS radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Kansas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many offer additional options for testing also. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Downs KS employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Classes

Practical training is often conducted in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Downs KS home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just make sure that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

After you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating Downs KS x-ray tech schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important variable also. But along with cost and location, what more should you factor in when comparing colleges? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? Most radiology technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Downs KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Kansas xray tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Downs KS health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Downs KS healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Downs KS home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Downs KS colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Downs KS, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to reflect on questions you could be asked. One of the things that interviewers frequently ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not merely the personal reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what attributes and abilities you possess that make you good at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, as well as a significant number of routine interview questions, so you must prepare several ideas about how you want to address them. Considering there are so many factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a variety of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work interests you as well as the talents you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the position. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but jot down a few ideas and anecdotes that relate to your personal experiences and strengths. Going over sample responses can help you to prepare your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to include to wow the recruiter.
