Mission KS x-ray tech internship programCongrats on your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Mission KS so you can learn to be a radiologic technologist. But now that you have decided to go into the satisfying field of healthcare, how do you tackle picking the ideal school and program to ensure that you will get the proper training to become a qualified practitioner? And since the majority of states do require that radiology technicians become licensed, depending on where you subsequently practice you might need training to pass a licensing examination. So it’s imperative that you research each of the schools you are looking at so that you can evaluate each program. A number of potential students begin by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and typically settle on the lowest cost. But while cost and location should be taken into account, there are other critical qualifiers as well. For example, you should find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internship programs. These questions and others you must ask the colleges you are examining are provided later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a radiology technician does and the degrees and training options that are available.

Radiology Technician Work Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may practice in Mission KS clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also regularly assess its performance and safety. They are also expected to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Mission KS medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally takes 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable also. One thing to consider is that Mission KS radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may frequently be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several provide other alternatives for testing also. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Mission KS employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it might improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Mission 57555As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often provided in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Mission KS home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just make sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

After you have decided on the type of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing Mission KS x-ray technician schools. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Mission KS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the Kansas xray tech schools you are reviewing have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Mission KS medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Mission KS healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Mission KS home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Mission KS colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Mission KS, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Some Background on Mission Kansas

Mission, Kansas

Mission is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, United States, and part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The population was 9,323 at the 2010 census.

An Indian mission was established in 1829 at the town's site, hence the name of the later settlement.[6]

The site where Mission now sits was once a rest stop for wagons moving westward on the Santa Fe Trail during the 19th Century.[citation needed] The clear spring water rising to the surface in present-day Mission made it an ideal place to collect drinking water for horses and travelers. For years the area was owned as a homestead by the Breyfogel family, who subdivided their land into 245 lots and sold them off in the early 20th Century.[citation needed] The town grew up slowly in the 1920s and 1930s, benefiting from its close proximity to Kansas City, Missouri.[citation needed] After World War II however, the town grew rapidly amid the post-war housing boom, as young families from Kansas City purchased their first homes.[citation needed]

In 2003, Mission absorbed the neighboring city of Countryside.[citation needed]

Today, the town retains this "post-war look," with small houses of different designs on large lots, in contrast to stereotypical neighborhoods of outer-ring suburbs.[7]
